All thanks to Insect Lore we were easily able to raise baby lady bugs and caterpillars. They have a lot of amazing different, and fun science activities for children of all ages. This is a great chance to teach your child new vocabulary words (metamorphosis, pupa, chrysalis), and talk about how insects change.
Lady Bugs:
Books to read: The Grouchy Lady Bug by Eric Carle
Are you a lady bug? by Judy Allen
I raised ladybugs with my Head Start children and preschoolers. Although, I did bring them home on the weekends and my four year old loved watching them change and grow every week. Since I had no idea that baby lady bugs looked like they do, I thought it would be fun for the children to guess what they think they are going to be. Only one child out of 34 guessed correctly. After about 2 weeks the children came in Monday morning and were so amazed and excited that they were ladybugs!

Butterflies
Books: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
From Caterpillar to Butterfly by Deborah Heiligman
I bought this Butterfly Garden. I bought the kit, because I am planning on making this a yearly tradition with Pressly. So next year, I can buy just the cup of caterpillars. We had six caterpillars, after about two weeks we had four that had changed into chrysalis. After 10 days we had three beautiful butterflies. We fed them oranges and after a couple of days we set them free. Pressly loved watching the butterflies change. When we are outside she is constantly on the hunt for butterflies (or rolly pollies). We still have a caterpillar that is slowly getting bigger...
